Track Overview

Mid Ohio Sports Car Course opened in 1962 under the direction of Les Griebling, who envisioned a technical road course that would challenge drivers with elevation changes and complex corner sequences. Over the decades, the track became a cornerstone of American motorsports, hosting CART, IndyCar, IMSA, and major motorcycle championships that helped build its national reputation. A major renovation in 1990 improved safety barriers, repaved the surface, and expanded spectator areas to accommodate growing crowds. Additional upgrades in the early 2000s modernized the paddock and enhanced runoff zones, making the facility safer for high speed competition. Many legendary drivers including Bobby Rahal, Scott Dixon, and Michael Andretti have claimed victories here, adding to the track’s storied legacy. As fans and racers spend more time at the facility, they discover how weather patterns, tire selection, and subtle racing line adjustments can dramatically influence lap times on this demanding course.

Track Layout

The 2.4 mile layout features thirteen turns, elevation changes, and a mix of technical and high speed sections that reward precision and smooth driving. Drivers often study the Keyhole, Madness, and Thunder Valley to understand how momentum and braking points shape competitive lap times. The track’s narrow sections require discipline and patience, especially during multi class racing.

Events

Mid Ohio hosts IMSA, IndyCar, club racing, and motorcycle championships that draw large crowds each season. Fans appreciate the variety of racing disciplines that showcase different driving styles and vehicle technologies. Special events such as vintage racing weekends add historical flavor to the schedule.

Visitor Tips

Arriving early helps secure the best hillside viewing spots, especially near the Esses and Thunder Valley. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to the size of the facility and its hilly terrain. Bringing binoculars enhances the viewing experience from distant vantage points.
