Bog Turtle Glyptemys muhlenbergii

Identification
This tiny turtle has a dark shell with a bright orange patch on each side of the head. Its habitat requirements are extremely specific.

Size
3 to 4 inches

Diet
It feeds on insects worms and small invertebrates.

Habitat
It occurs in rare fen habitats in northeast Ohio.

Activity Period
April to October

Behavior
It is secretive and spends much time buried in soft mud. It is highly sensitive to habitat disturbance. It is most active in warm months.

Lifecycle
Breeding occurs in spring and females lay a small clutch of eggs in early summer.

Population
The population is extremely small and vulnerable.

History
It has declined severely due to habitat loss.

Human Interactions
It avoids humans and is rarely seen.

Facts
It is one of the smallest turtles in North America.
