Stadium Overview

Cleveland Arena opened in 1937 and served as the city’s primary indoor sports venue for more than four decades. The arena hosted the Cleveland Barons hockey team, early Cleveland Cavaliers games, and numerous concerts and political events. It was known for its intimate atmosphere but also for aging infrastructure that eventually led to its replacement. The building played a major role in the growth of professional sports in Cleveland. Cleveland Arena closed in 1974 after the opening of the Richfield Coliseum and was demolished in 1977. Its legacy remains significant in Ohio sports history.

Architecture

The arena featured a classic mid century design. Seating was compact and close to the action. Aging facilities eventually limited its use.

Events

The venue hosted hockey, basketball, and concerts. Early Cavaliers games were played here. Community events filled the schedule.
