Early life and career

Rutherford B Hayes was born in Delaware Ohio and trained as a lawyer before serving in the Civil War. He rose to the rank of general and returned to public life as a lawyer and politician. He served in the US House and as governor of Ohio where he built a reputation for reform minded governance and for seeking to bridge political divides.
